The Memorabilia Photos

Posted by admin under A Smile and a Story® on

When I was a kid, our neighborhood DQ store didn’t hand out cone whistles, but based on the comments and photos we received after our memorabilia post, they were a popular item with many young DQ fans over the years.  Chris Del Plato from Long Valley, NJ, still has one:

And here is another version, submitted by Joshuah Cornell of Indianapolis, IN:

DQ® store owner Herman Reschke, from Geneseo, IL, shared his impressive collection of vintage packaging:

John Longoria of Corpus Christi, TX, tells us that he is still in touch with the girls in this photo:

We wonder how long it took Trevor Klein of Eik River, MN, to eat the sundaes that came in his collection of miniature baseball helmets:

And our own Web Master has this hanging in his garage at home:

He will not be receiving a $5 gift card, but everyone else will.  Thanks to you all for sharing your photos!

I work for DQ in Portage, Michigan
and love it. Meeting people and making them happy with beautiful cones and all the rest of the best!

I have a question. I have looked all over the internet and dairy queen sites and cant find any info on a tray that i have. it has a little dutch girl on it and says dairy queen. when did the dutch girl come out. its really cute. any clues???

Alethea, thank you for your question! IDQ was incorporated in 1962, and tragically much of the history prior to incorporation is vague, or lost. What I can tell you is that this girl was called “Little Miss Dairy Queen” and the information we have indicates she showed up on signage developed in Pennsylvania in 1961. It sounds like she was used in signage after that — however we have no information on how long she was used or how much she was used. How fun that you have this tray!

Ahhh…the good ol’ baseball helmets! Those were awesome and should totally be brought back- along with the Peanuts character cups…loved those as a kid!

You can really find quite a few things on e bay. We had two walk up stores around here that had the little dutch girl on top of the stores, but unfortunately these stores were torn down. One moved to a different location and the other one just built a new building right where the old one was. It is really sad to see the nostalgic stores get torn down, and I find that my customers at the store I operate miss the old time walk up stores. I work at one old walk up style store part time and almost everyday I have one or two tell me stories about how when they were kids they would come to the store and get treats. People like the history that comes with these old buildings and with consistancy. Meaning it has always been the same and it gives them a good feeling and memory. The newer stores just don’t give people that feeling.

Hello My name is Nadine and I belong to the Dairy Queen club and was wondering about some salt and pepper shakers I have of the Little Miss Dairy Queen. I have just found out alittle more information that she originated in 1961 in PA. On the back of the figures of the s&p it is stamped The Dairy Queen. Could you tell me the value of these? I have only found this info through you no one else seems to have them or know of them…Thank you for your time….Sincerely, Nadine

I have a Mr Misty lighted sign that is probably 40 yrs old or more. Does anyone know more about these?

When I was young I recall my favorite treat in the “Serve Yourself” freezer case being a frozen malt treat served in a paper cup. Rolling in in your hands released the treat that was eaten off a popsicle stick. Does anyone else recall this treat?
