Sometimes it’s hard to choose. Sometimes each of the options is so attractive… so unique in its appeal that making a decision is downright impossible. For example, choosing between a Chicken Strip Basket and a GrillBurger™ Combo Meal is hard. Or choosing between the Candy Cane Chill Blizzard® Treat (December’s Blizzard of the Month) and the limited-time-only Candy Cane Royal Shake—that’s REALLY hard.
Which makes me a little bit glad that I wasn’t a part of the Dairy Queen® system back in 1983, when the DQ® uniform catalog offered these store employee ensembles in both “Standard” and “Western” versions:
My Great Aunt Joan and I shared the same birthday. As a kid, that was about the only thing I knew about my Great Aunt Joan, but I was a big fan of hers because every year, to commemorate our shared special day, she would send me a card with a crisp $5 bill inside.
All year I would look forward to that card. And when it arrived, the first stop in spending my birthday money was up the street at our neighborhood Dairy Queen® store. At that time, the mid-1970s, my favorite treat was a Mr. Misty® Kiss—a push-up-style novelty made in stores from a Mr. Misty slush (now known as an Arctic Rush® slush) poured into a plastic tube and then frozen solid. A straw inserted at the bottom of the tube pushed the treat up and out the top. They came in all the Mr. Misty drink flavors, but my first choice was always purple. And as it happened, a Mr. Misty Kiss purchase left me with most of my birthday money still in my pocket.
Every once in a while we at the Dairy Queen® home office get a customer request for the return of the “Goony Bird Sundae.” Sadly, this particular Royal Treat® will not be returning any time soon to the DQ® menu. But just for fun, here’s a picture (circa 1959) of this, uh, unique treat:
If you were a fan, please, tell us what you liked about this “crazy mixed-up taste triumph of toasted marshmallows and coconut”!
Here at the Dairy Queen® corporate headquarters, we keep a permanent archive of historical photographs, uniforms, advertisements and other fun things. As I was poking around one day recently, I stumbled across an item I’ve never seen before, circa 1976:
So the last Thursday of every month we are going to deem “Throwback Thursday”. Maybe we’ll share an old product, perhaps nostalgic merchandise or vintage photos, anything in our archives or from our fans is fair game. This week I’m paying respect to the Mr. Misty®. As a child of the 80′s and 90′s, I spent many summer nights sipping a grape flavored Mr. Misty… usually adding vanilla soft-serve and making a Mr. Misty float (the BEST!). I came across this old product poster and it sent me right back to my younger days. Does this look familiar to anyone else?!?
