Throwback Thursday – Mr. Misty® Style
Posted by admin under Dairy Queen,Eats & Treats,Throwback Thursday on
So the last Thursday of every month we are going to deem “Throwback Thursday”. Maybe we’ll share an old product, perhaps nostalgic merchandise or vintage photos, anything in our archives or from our fans is fair game. This week I’m paying respect to the Mr. Misty®. As a child of the 80′s and 90′s, I spent many summer nights sipping a grape flavored Mr. Misty… usually adding vanilla soft-serve and making a Mr. Misty float (the BEST!). I came across this old product poster and it sent me right back to my younger days. Does this look familiar to anyone else?!?

I still call them Mr. Misty! lol I can’t even remember what they are called now. Oh, why do things have to change?
P.S. My favorite was the cherry Mr. Misty float!
We call them Arctic Rush now! People still say Mr. Misty, but I know what they mean
I still call them Mr.Mistys too, I always say that when I order, but I have never been corrected. I dont even think I was realizing I was doing it. Do you think they would still make a Mr. Misty float? I am going to ask next time I am in.
I remember when I was little around 1973. You used to be able to get your cone covered with some sort of crunchy stuff. The workers would put your cone into a circular thing and turn a handle around it and the toppings would sprinkle on the cone. I can still remember the taste. This was in Colorado. I would love to know what that stuff was called!
I can’t believe Texas DQ don’t serve chocolate ice cream. How disappointing!!! Why???
I would like to address some comments on here. @Justin … Yes, you can ask for a Arctic Rush Float. Even though these items no longer appear on DQ’s core menu, they are available. The name “Misty” was replaced with “Artic Rush” some years back, but the product is the same.
@Courtney … The crunchy stuff is called Peanut Brittle Crunch or some say Crunch Coat. It is still available at the DQs in my are (Cedar Rapids, IA) and I have encountered it here and there as I travel around the country, always making sure to stop at the local DQ.
On a personal note, I miss the Orange flavor Arctic Rush. I know it was a slow mover, but man, that was my favorite.
Hi Sue,
DQ restaurants are independently owned and operated franchises, so decisions on the products carried are made by the store owners. If you would like for us to get in touch with the store for you, please contact us at http://tiny.cc/3uv19. Thanks!
Thank you Robert!
Hey Corporate Peeps… how bout just tell the big guns up there in the glass offices to quit messing with what works, and bring back the original Mr Misty. Betetr yet, Why not have a marketing blitz and offer monthly throw back items and advertise with the old marketing materials. That would probably get people like me who are in their 30′s+ but loved the way DQ used to be, back into your struggling franchise operations, despite the extra tire i can expect to appear on my rump from consuming your fun colored icy confections. I’m just saying…
Hi KT,
We’re sorry we’ve upset and disappointed you. While our Mr. Misty is now called Arctic Rush, our product development team would love to hear your suggestions. You can submit it at DQ.com. Before any suggestions can be submitted, you’ll need to fill out our submission agreement form, which you can find a link to on the right side of this page: http://www.dairyqueen.com/us-en/talk-to-dq/
We look forward to hearing your ideas! Thanks.
Finding butterscotch dip cone is getting harder to find at the DQ these days. About 25 years ago, I was a teenager working at the DQ and I would make Peanut Buster Bars and put them in the freezer overnight then dipped them in chocolate the next day. I bought a DQ Buster Bar that was obviously made in a factory somewhere and there was a obvious difference in quality compared to what I used to make. The shipped in Buster Bars had sub par peanuts, ice cream, chocolate dip and no fudge in the bottom.
We are sorry Jimmy. Please contact us at http://tiny.cc/3uv19 so that we may address your concerns. Thank you.
Are u bringing back the cotton candy blizzard? It’s my favorite!! U should make it permanent on the menu, thanks!
@ Robert. Mr. Misty and Arctic Rush are NOT the same product. There is still one DQ here in Cedar Rapids that has the original Mr. Misty. All the others have the Arctic Rush and there is a HUGE difference in the texture and flavors. I asked the owner of the one store and they said they had refused to switch to the new machines for the Arctic Rush and chose to keep the original Misty.

I agree with Jeff. I had an Arctic Rush today and the texture was nowhere near a Mr. Misty. It was like little ice balls rather than a smooth slushy texture. it was good, but not as good as a Misty!
Marsha and Jeff — actually there were no changes made to the product other than the name change and some added flavors when we moved from “Mr. Misty” to “Arctic Rush”. That said what you may be noticing is a difference in the ice in your drinks, and there may be a variance from store to store in that aspect. Again that hasn’t changed, as we had a varience when the product was named Mr. Misty. It has to do with differences in freezers and the ice those freezers produce. I hope this helps!
I actually bought one of the original Mr Misty machines from a DQ that went out of business years ago. I just sold it online for $300 and it was in pristine shape. I should have kept it, but it was just taking up space.
Just an FYI, Mr. Misty lime tasted the same going down as coming up. It was the perfect hangover drink lol
I was talking to a client today who had never heard of the Mister Misty…I remember the brain freeze I would get from the grape and blueberry as a kid! Yummy!
There is no way the Artic Rush and the Mr Misty. I have had artic rushes at a few locations and it is mostly water with a little ice. Only the seasonal DQ has the old school machine and it tastes right. You are trying to hard to change what works.
