Pretty much I’m like Buddy the Elf — if it has sugar, I’ll eat it. Now, I’ve never gone to the extreme of drinking syrup or putting it on my spaghetti, but that’s not to say it hasn’t crossed my mind. The older I get, the more apparent it is that I need to eat everything in moderation and as part of a balanced diet. (Have I mentioned my BFF is a genius nutritionist?)
I think that is why 2011 was so hard and 2012 WILL be so hard. I spent 2011 taste testing all of the ridiculously creative and NEW products for 2012. 2012 will obviously be spent eating said ridiculously creative and new products. April’s Blizzard® of the Month is a new flavor, so there are 30 days of Mini Blizzard Treats coming my way there, followed by May’s Blizzard of the Month, which, in my opinion, will be second only to my most very favorite ever. I can’t mention my favorite by name because we get inundated with comments about bringing it back. Is it Harry Potter where they have a character named HeWho (He who shall not be named)? Well this would be ItWhich (shall not be named). Oh I love ItWhich.
Also making a comeback this year is one of my all time favorites, the Frozen Hot Chocolate. Rich cocoa fudge AND DQ® soft serve with a swirl of one of your favorite flavors: Double Fudge, Caramel or Peanut Butter? Yes please!
This is just the tip of the iceberg; we also have a ton of new and delicious food items hitting your local store throughout the year. Yep, 2012 will be pretty sweet for DQ and pretty sweet for me!
I love PIE — and I love that we can have fun with math on Pi Day. Pi equals 3.1415926535… and we celebrate Pi Day on 3/14.
Pi represents the relationship between a circle’s diameter (its width) and its circumference (the distance around the circle). I don’t want to spoil the fun you will have searching the Internet, or your math textbook, for interesting facts and information about Pi. I confess to not being much of a numbers gal; still, I find days like this help pique my interest. Who doesn’t like pie and how much dinner time discussion can you get out of learning (or in my case, re-learning) about Pi while eating a piece of pie?
We have DELICIOUS Pie Blizzard® Treats at DQ® stores and restaurants. Why, you could even use Pi to calculate the volume of the DQ Cup in which your favorite DQ Pie Blizzard Treat arrives. Which flavor will you choose? Banana Cream Pie Blizzard Treat? French Silk Pie Blizzard Treat?

I heard from a loyal DQ® customer who has been running triathlons with his friend since 1988. They had created a DQ tradition—to stop at every DQ store on their way home from the faraway races to get a Blizzard® Treat to celebrate accomplishing their feat. Since then, they have committed every single summer to always include a Tour de Dairy Queen® road trip with a little friendly competition in a small-town triathlon thrown in for good measure.
To date, they have completed 19 trips and consumed 85 treats each. They did make a major modification to the rules in 1991 however. After spending three hours hunting down a DQ store in one area, they decided that one stop in a major metropolitan area would count as an official stop.
Another time, a friend gave them a list to help map out the DQ stops well in advance of the race. One summer they even took a detour home because the longer route had considerably more stores. They admit that their number one reason for the endeavors is for the fitness, but appreciate that they have found a way to make fitness and DQ treats go hand in hand.
The Blizzard® of the Month for October is Pumpkin Pie! Vote on our poll for how many spoons you would give this Blizzard flavor and because I love this Blizzard so much I broke my own rules and create an all new “spoon rating”. Check out the video to see the new rating!
Thanks to all of our loyal DQ® customers who went out and bought Blizzard® Treats on Miracle Treat Day on August 11!
DQ has been raising funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for 27 years now, and we’ve raised almost $90 million during this time. Miracle Treat Day is our signature fundraising event, and we appreciate all of you treating yourselves AND helping kids in need! Donations for Miracle Treat Day are still coming in, but we’re expecting to have a donation of over $4 million for CMN Hospitals from just this one day!
Want to hear another really cool thing that happened this year? Franchisee Delon Mork challenged his town of 6,000 people to purchase 25,000 Blizzard treats on Miracle Treat Day. If they met the goal – he said he’d jump out of a plane! The town of Madison, SD, rose to the challenge… check out the link to Delon’s jump below!
The Blizzard® of the Month for September is the Ooey Gooey Caramel Brownie! Vote on our poll for how many spoons you would give this Blizzard flavor. Watch the video for your chance to win a $5 DQ® gift card (the first five will win!).
Earlier this summer I learned that a friend of mine has been going through a very difficult time. Her three-year-old daughter, Rachel, had been hospitalized with a serious illness. Rachel’s kidneys had partially failed, allowing toxins to travel to both sides of her brain. Although dialysis eventually restored her kidney function, Rachel has a long road of rehabilitation ahead as she works to recover from the resulting brain injury.
Rachel is now being treated at Gillette Children’s Hospital, which is the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Thanks to my friend’s frequent Facebook updates, I’ve followed Rachel’s progress as she undergoes daily physical and occupational therapy sessions, has re-learned to smile and laugh, and as she fights to regain her ability to speak. One after another, the tiny miracles are adding up.
Every year on Miracle Treat Day, I visit a participating DQ® location to buy a Blizzard® Treat for myself during my lunch break. In the evening I return to buy another for myself and more for my family members. I’ve always been proud to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and happy to have a reason to double-dip on treats once a year. But this year it has taken on an extra special meaning, since I know those treats I’ll be buying will directly support the hospital that is helping my friend and her daughter.
Today is Miracle Treat Day. Stop at a participating DQ location (find the one nearest you at http://miracletreatday.com), pick up a Blizzard Treat for yourself, and maybe one for a friend as well. Because you never know who might be needing help from your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. As for me, I’m going for Rachel.
The Blizzard® of the Month for August is the NEW Nutter Butter® — A peanut butter lover’s dream come true! Vote on our poll for how many spoons you would give this Blizzard flavor. Last month you the fans gave the Triple Chocoholic Blizzard Treat three spoons!
