Thank You for a Great Year!

Posted by admin under A Smile and a Story® on December 29th, 2009

As the year comes to a close, it seems natural to reflect on 2009.  Let me tell you, it’s been a crazy year for the Dairy Queen® system and its launch into the social media landscape. In February we launched this blog, and as of today we have received over 90,000 visits, which is above and beyond our expectations for the blog in its first year. We did have a Facebook account prior to this blog being launched, but since that time we have grown to over 720,000 Facebook fans. We have also launched a Twitter account (@dairyqueen) in May and we are about to reach 5,000 followers.

What I’m trying to say to all Dairy Queen fans that follow, read or “fan” us through social media is a big “thank you” for engaging in a brand that you are passionate about! And I’d like to let you in on a little secret–we are working on some huge things for next year, one of which will launch in January, so be sure to check back to find out what big things are in store for DQ® in 2010!

Thank you and Happy New Year from the Dairy Queen Blog Team!

All I Want For Christmas

Posted by PR Wonk under A Smile and a Story® on December 22nd, 2009

Although the holidays can be expensive and filled with stress–lots of last minute shopping, trying to figure out what the annual holiday greeting card to friends and family should look like, who should get one and trying to mail them before the first of the year–I still love the holidays.  I always have and always will. I love the lights, the decorations, the music, the specials on TV, the tree and trimmings, all the homemade goodies, family gatherings and, yes, I still love the presents… giving as well as receiving them.

As a child I remember, as many children do, dreaming of all of the things under the tree and counting the presents, shaking them and trying to figure out what was in each of them.  Even though it seemed like it took forever to come, Christmas was always over way too quickly and it wasn’t long before we slipped back into our normal, everyday routines of school and work.

Tonight as I put my two boys to bed, they asked me “Dad, what was your favorite present you ever got at Christmas?”  After thinking for a second or two, I smiled and told them it was a stuffed lion, “Larry Lion” to be exact.  He was made back in the late 1960s by Mattel and he could talk.  If you pulled his string, his mouth would move and could say things such as, “I’m king of the jungle” and “I’m a very, very, very brave lion.” Oh, and he would also roar.  I think I got Larry when I was around three years old and I remember how petrified I was of him at first because he seemed so real and that freaked me out. I quickly overcame my fear of Larry and we became best friends.  I know that my mom still has him tucked away somewhere in a closet and the last time I ran across him, he still talked.

Telling my boys about “Larry Lion” made me smile and it brought back all of the wonderful Christmas memories of years ago.  Before this holiday season slips away, and the stress of trying to fit everything in before that magical day, please take a moment and share with us your all-time favorite gift or treasured memory “from Christmas’ long, long ago.”

We wish you and yours all the joys and memories this holiday season brings!

Larry Lion

The End of an Era

Posted by PR Wonk under In the Community on November 3rd, 2009

As the saying goes, all good things have to come to an end.  Although I understand that my world around me is constantly changing and evolving, it doesn’t mean that it is always easy to accept.

Growing up in Mountain Lake, a small farming community in southwest Minnesota, life was pretty consistent from year to year.  We had our families, our friends, our school, our hang out (which happened to be the Dairy Queen®  store) and numerous other things that helped define who we were and who we’d become later in life.

Recently, while visiting my mom who still lives in the same house in which I grew up, I realized just how much Mountain Lake had changed since I moved away more than 25 years ago.  Highway 60, which used to run through the heart of my community, now skirts around its edges giving travelers nary a glimpse of what life must be like in town.

The public high school, once home of the Lakers, our orange and black colors and rich heritage, now has a consolidated sports program with a neighboring community and claims a silver and maroon wolverine as its mascot.

Other than the local post office, none of the main street businesses from my past such as Mix bakery, Our Own and Gambles hardware stores, Epps Department store, Manor Inn restaurant, or Jack and Jill grocery store are still in operation.  The buildings are there, but the people and merchandise that was once offered there are no longer.

Perhaps one of the hardest things to accept as I drove through town this time was not seeing the familiar red DQ® ellipse sign that always seemed to welcome young and old alike.  You see, the Dairy Queen that had always been there for me after school, after practice, after games, on dates, after swimming, when I needed to grab a quick bite for lunch or dinner or just hang out in front of with friends, is no more.  Oh, the building is there and is in the process of being renovated into an independent establishment, but the familiar DQ restaurant, as I had always known and remembered it, is now gone.

Sadly, it is the end of an era. Just as I’ve said good-bye to friends and family members, I say good-bye to “my DQ.”  Yes, unfortunately, all good things do have to come to an end.  It was a wonderful run and I am glad that the memories I experienced there are still as fresh as the creamy soft serve that was once enjoyed by tens of thousands of customers through the years just like me.

Even though the DQ location of my youth has closed, the cool thing is that there are more than 250 DQ restaurants to visit throughout the state, and nearly 4,600 throughout the country.  We have our own Dairy Queen restaurant where I live today, which gives me the opportunity to take my two boys and start making their own lifelong memories.  And if the tradition holds true, I’m confident that someday soon, they will come to refer to it as their DQ.
