Spring Break: Sweet Memories and New Plans

Posted by Carolyn K under Eats & Treats on March 11th, 2010

I have two favorite memories of spring break.  They stand out because most of my breaks were quiet, lay-around-the-house lazy days.  The first was during my first year of college – my grandparents offered a week at their place in Brownsville, Texas. A free trip? I was IN, and I had a great time! They planned a day trip for me to South Padre Island with other “young people” – wonderful fun. My favorite memories, though, were really of the time I spent with my grandparents. We crossed into Matamoros, Mexico, went to the zoo in Brownsville, and had an evening or two out with their friends. I was given the opportunity to spend time with them, all by myself.  Memories I treasure now that Grandpa is gone.

The other was with my son a couple of years ago when his high school choir went to Spain.  What an opportunity – absolutely BEAUTIFUL country.  My mother and I were able to tag along with the kids on their trip.  Unbelievable music in the most amazing venues.  I learned Mom and I could travel well together, and I loved being there with my son to see him and his friends enjoy the opportunities before them. Now he’s off to college, and, again, I’ve got those great memories.

Both of those trips were a bit unconventional when you think of spring break and the kinds of vacations people usually plan.  Here we are in another unconventional year – and big trips may not be an option for many.  What to do instead?  Whether you’re a college student or a family looking for something to do, there are lots of options for you!  Explore your community or your county; think of places that you might only take visitors to see. Why wait?  Does your family have a cabin? Movie or game nights at home?

A trip to a DQ® restaurant can be a great way to brighten a long week at home!  Try our Sweet Deals menu for dinner, or a Blizzard® Cake would make a perfect treat for game night…and our Blizzard of the Month might just be the best treat while watching movies at home.

What are your plans for Spring Break this year?

The $3, $4 or $5 Question of the Day

Posted by PR Wonk under Eats & Treats on March 19th, 2009

Even though it’s been more than 20 years since I entered the hallowed halls of a college institution, I still remember when, during the first day of a semester of class, my philosophy professor introduced himself to the stundents and asked each of us this question:  “If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?”

To this day, I am still perplexed by that rather odd, seemingly random inquiry.  However, I guess it worked as an ice breaker, and I somehow felt more secure sitting among all the oaks and walnut trees in that class.

As the Dairy Queen® system embarks on our first-ever value menu (better known as Sweet Deals), which is intended to save you some hard earned cash and give you the ability to exercise your freedom of choice, I would like to pose a similar question:

If you could magically turn yourself into one of the nine deliciously irresistible, scrumptiously tantalizing items on our Sweet Deals menu, which soft serve or hot food product would you choose to be and why? Please remember, penmanship and creativity count!

DQ Grill & Chill® Wedding is a "Sweet Deal"

Posted by JT under A Smile and a Story® on March 17th, 2009

You may have heard of scuba divers getting married underwater, or daring couples saying “I do” while skydiving, but you probably have never heard of a wedding with this unique twist.  On Feb. 21, 2009, happy couple Toni Walker and James Manzano sealed their sweet deal when they exchanged vows at a DQ Grill & Chill restaurant in Bethlehem, Pa.

Walker works in the restaurant as an assistant manager, and after general manager Louis Romero learned that Walker was planning a simple wedding at the local courthouse, he insisted that the ceremony take place at his location.  The event took about three weeks to plan.

“This is our wedding,” Manzano said. “We thought, ‘Why not make it fun?’”

Afterward, the newlyweds enjoyed a meal of Chicken Strip Baskets before treating invited guests and restaurant customers a custom Blizzard® wedding cake.  Curly Topâ was also in attendance.

“I thought it was very romantic,” said Erin Wimmer, an 8-year-old from Bethlehem Township, who became part of the celebration when she happened to visit the restaurant on the day of the wedding.  “It’s fun to get married at a place you don’t usually get married, like where you can get ice cream.”
